SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Missions concluded their six-game homestand with the Corpus Christi Hooks on Sunday night. Despite losing the last three games, the Missions came to play on Sunday and ended the series with a 6-3 victory. The offense got things started with two runs in the first. Ryan Bergert provided a solid outing and Jose Espada recorded the win.

Jose Urquidy was the starting pitcher for the Hooks as he continued his rehab assignment. The Missions, after being held scoreless on Saturday, scored twice on three hits in the first inning. Ripken Reyes was hit by a pitch and stole second base to start the frame. Jackson Merrill singled and Reyes advanced to third base. Merrill stole second base to put two runners in scoring position. After retiring the next batter, Urquidy allowed a two-RBI double to Daniel Johnson. San Antonio gained a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Bergert was the starting pitcher for the Missions. After two hitless innings, Corpus Christi plated a run on two hits in the top of the third inning. Luis Aviles Jr. doubled to start the frame. Garrett Wolforth drove him in with a double to left field. The Missions held a 2-1 advantage.

The Missions added an insurance run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Merrill reached base on an infield single. After retiring the next batter, Johnson singled to right field. Marcos Castanon drove in Merrill with a base hit to left field. San Antonio had a 3-1 lead.

San Antonio improved their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Urquidy set down the first two batters before surrendering a single to Chandler Seagle. Reyes singled and Seagle advanced to third base. Merrill drove in both runners with a single to right-center field. His third hit of the day made it a 5-1 ballgame.

Bergert’s afternoon came to an end during the top of the fifth inning. The right-hander allowed a single and a walk to start the frame. After getting a ground out from Wolforth, Jose Espada entered from the bullpen. Espada inherited runners on third and second with one out. He issued a walk to Kenedy Corona to load the bases. Espada left them stranded after retiring the next two batters.

Urquidy, making his second rehab start with the Hooks, recorded the loss on Sunday. In five innings of work, he allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out three batters. Aaron Brown took the mound for Corpus Christi in the sixth inning.

After being held scoreless for four innings, the Hooks cut into the deficit with two runs on three hits in the top of the eighth inning. Facing Adam Mazur, Zach Daniels singled and stole second base to start the frame. Zach Dezenzo grounded out and Daniels advanced to third base. Jordan Brewer drove him in with a double to left-center field. Mazur retired the next batter before giving up an RBI double to J.C. Correa. The Missions held a 5-3 lead.

The Missions added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Facing Cole McDonald, Cole Cummings doubled to right field. Brandon Valenzuela singled and Cummings advanced to third base. Korry Howell drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right field. San Antonio had a 6-3 advantage.

In the top of the ninth inning, Kevin Kopps was the pitcher for San Antonio. Wolforth and Corona singled to start the frame. Drew Gilbert grounded into a double play and Wolforth advanced to third base. Daniels drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Dezenzo flew out to end the game.

The San Antonio Missions will have the day off on Monday before beginning a six-game series against the Arkansas Travelers on Tuesday, August 1st. The pitching matchups have not yet been determined. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. from Dickey-Stephens Park.
